In the wake of the forest fire that devastated parts of Horry County, Barefoot Resort & Golf has opted to close the Love and Fazio courses to public play for an undetermined amount of time beginning on April 29, according to Dave Genevro, Barefoot’s general manager. Barefoot officials hope to know how long the courses will be closed by the end of the week.
The Norman Course and the Dye Club, one of America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses, were unaffected by the fire and will remain open. Other than Love and Fazio, every other public course in Myrtle Beach is open for play.
The Love and Fazio layouts, two of the most popular Myrtle Beach golf courses, both escaped harm during the fire, which destroyed 70 homes at Barefoot, but some of the bridges used to link the courses suffered damage. The native wetlands and woods that surround certain holes were also burned, which doesn’t affect the course per se, but could impact the experience at Barefoot.
After initially allowing the public to play a hybrid course - 14 holes on Love and four on Fazio – the determination was made to close both layouts until each was able to provide the type of experience golfers have grown accustomed to.
The Barefoot Towers, operated by Premier Resorts, and all of the Barefoot’s multi-family homes were unharmed, so anyone planning to stay on the property for a golf trip will be unaffected. Golfers booked to play either the Love or Fazio courses in the coming days should contact their package provider, who will place them on another layout.
Golfers who booked rounds directly should contact the Barefoot pro shop, and the staff will find other available tee times.
Barefoot Resort & Golf, which opened all four coursed simultaneously in 2000, is one of the most high profile Myrtle Beach golf facilities. Golf Digest has ranked three of the four layouts – Fazio, Dye and Love – among America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses.
