Providence fire company.jpgThe FDNY 9-11 Memorial Golf Outing prides itself on being a good-time gathering for firefighters from across the nation, providing America’s first responders with the opportunity to celebrate the bond that links them.

For the ninth consecutive year, Myrtle Beach hosted the boisterous gathering. More than 500 firefighters from coast to coast came to the Grand Strand to play 36 of the area’s best courses and enjoy three days of revelry and reflection.

“There is a multitude of different fire companies from all over the United States that come here,” said Greg Forsyth of Staten Island, N.Y.  “We come here to bond with our brothers that helped us out after 9-11 … It’s a fantastic outing and the people of Myrtle Beach (are great).”

Caledonia, the four courses at Barefoot Resort, King’s North, Dunes Club, Rivers Edge and Tidewater were just a sampling of the courses that opened their arms to the firefighters. Firefighers dispersed throughout the area, enjoying an event that is more akin to a golf trip than a traditional tournament.

Beyond the course, the annual belly flop contest and Wednesday night’s barbeque are among the  highlights. The Wednesday night gathering, which includes steak and chicken for more than 500, brings everyone together for a final good bye until next year.

“Playing golf with my friends and having a beer,” said New Yorker Mark Washington when asked about the event’s highlights. “We are in Myrtle Beach, the golf courses are unbelievable. Just to come out in nice weather, the event, and the courses - you can’t beat it.”
