Easter week means it’s time for one of the premier Myrtle Beach golf tournaments – the Palmetto High School Golf Championship - to tee it up.
From North Myrtle Beach to Omaha, Neb. to Tahoe City, Calif., high school teams from across the United States are gathering for the 14th annual Palmetto, April 21-23. The largest boys’ high school tournament in the nation, the 2011 Palmetto has attracted 48 teams from 10 states. The event is also one of the largest Myrtle Beach golf tournaments.
The 54-hole, college-style event will be played on eight of Myrtle Beach’s best layouts, including two that have been ranked among America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses by Golf Digest. All 48 teams will play a qualifying round on Thursday and then be placed into one of three flights, based on their score, for the 36-hole finish.
The host courses are the Love and Norman layouts at Barefoot Resort, Heathland, Parkland and Moorland at Legends Resort, and Lion’s Paw, Panther’s Run and Tiger’s Eye at Ocean Ridge Plantation. The Palmetto is the first of several multi-day Myrtle Beach golf tournaments scheduled for 2011.
Among the favorites at this year’s event are Taylor Dickson of Forestview High School (Gastonia, N.C.), who tied for medalist honors in 2010, Dru Love of Frederica Academy (St. Simons Island, Ga.), the son of PGA Tour star Davis Love III, and Pinewood Prep’s Richard Hubbard, who finished tied for 12th as a freshman in 2010.
Last year’s Palmetto was decided in a sudden playoff. After 36 holes of stroke-play competition, La Quinta (Calif.) and Forestview were tied at 605. All five players for each team competed in the playoff with the top four scores counting.
The playoff started and ended on the 375-yard 10th hole at Lion’s Paw when four Blackhawk players made par 4, giving La Quinta an aggregate total one stroke better than Forestview.
Among the Palmetto’s alumni are rising PGA Tour star Rickie Fowler, who won the event in 2006, and Austin Cody, the 2009 champ who is starting as a freshman at Duke this season.
