East Carolina golfer.jpegMyrtle Beach Golf Holiday and Golfweek magazine are partnering up to bring a new – and unique – college golf tournament to the Grand Strand this fall. Twelve colleges from across the nation will bring their men’s and women’s teams to the area to compete in the 54-hole Golfweek Collegiate Tournament September 11-13.

The Golfweek Collegiate Tournament will be the only event in the country that has men’s and women’s teams competing at the same time. A men’s and women’s champion will be crowned, giving schools a chance to bolster their NCAA Championship prospects on two of the nation’s best golf courses.

The event will also crown an overall champion, using combined scores from both the men and women, though the outcome of that phase of the competition will have no impact on each team’s individual ranking.

True Blue Golf Plantation will host the men’s event and Caledonia Golf & Fish Club will host the women’s tournament. True Blue, a 4-star course, has been ranked among the nation’s top 100 public courses, while Caledonia is currently ranked among America’s top 100 public layouts by Golfweek, Golf Digest and Golf Magazine.

“The Golfweek Collegiate Tournament will attract some of the nation’s best young golfers to the Myrtle Beach area,” MBGH’s tournament director, Dave Macpherson, said. “The event will also allow the Grand Strand to showcase itself as a destination to a group of players and parents who will likely continue to travel and play the game well into the future.”

Golfweek will have an editorial team on-site to chronicle the tournament through photos, stories and video, providing the Myrtle Beach area with exposure on one of the game’s most popular websites in the weeks leading up to the Fall travel golf season.

The 12 teams participating in the tournament are: Boston College, Campbell, Central Arkansas, East Carolina, Jacksonville State, James Madison, North Texas, Northern Iowa, South Florida, Texas State, Troy and UNC Wilmington.

The highest ranked men’s teams in the field are North Texas (29th) and East Carolina (39th), according to Golfweek. The highest ranked women’s teams are East Carolina (51st) and North Texas (52nd).
