Golf Channel analyst Charlie Rymer lingered on the green talking with his playing partners, former all-pro Sterling Sharpe joked with participants, and national spokesman Jim Huber addressed 150 players.
A range of celebrities came to Myrtle Beach, the Golf Capital of the World, to take the fight to prostate cancer, and everyone had a good time in the process.
The third annual Know Your Score: Fight Prostate Cancer Celebrity Golf Tournament was played on an impeccably conditioned Long Bay Club, and attracted a full field of golfers. All proceeds from the tournament were dedicated to increasing awareness and providing early testing for prostate cancer.
Eleven-time NBA champion Sam Jones, former heavyweight champion James “Bonecrusher” Smith, former Major League Baseball all-star Tony Womack, and 12-year NBA veteran Brevin Knight were among the celebrities who joined the fun.
While talk of cancer generally elicits a somber response, the Know Your Score event was full of laughs and cold drinks on a warm Saturday in Myrtle Beach.
Following the golf tournament, there was a Links and Laughs Comedy night at Kingston Plantation featuring Bobby Collins.
The most common non-skin cancer in America, prostate cancer afflicts 1 in 6 men, the majority of that total over the age of 40. As the world’s most popular golf destination, that demographic is Myrtle Beach’s core audience. As a result, Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday teamed up with Zero: The Project to End Prostate Cancer to launch the Know Your Score: Fight Prostate Cancer campaign.
Know Your Score is a multifaceted effort that also includes closest-to-the-pin contests and out-of-market fundraising tournaments. Money raised by Know Your Score is dedicated to improving research, early testing and education.
