Hot List: Myrtle Beach's Top 5 Seafood Restaurants

gulfstream.jpgSure golf is the main attraction on a trip to Myrtle Beach, but the bounty offered by the nearby Atlantic Ocean is hard to resist, especially at dinner time.

Seafood tops everyone’s menu when they come to town, and Myrtle Beach’s stream of all-you-can-buffets is the answer for many, but some prefer quality over quantity. For those with a more discerning palette, we offer up the five best places in the Myrtle Beach area for a great seafood dinner.

1. Rivertown Bistro – Located in Conway, approximately 12 miles west of Myrtle Beach, Rivertown Bistro is off the beaten path but worth the trip. Nine different types of sushi are available and the entrée menu is as creative as any. You won’t go wrong with the lightly blackened dolphin, jalapeno grit cake, blue crab crème and sautéed swiss chard.

2. Sea Captain’s House – The area’s oldest and most popular seafood restaurant, Sea Captain’s could easily occupy the top spot. Overlooking the ocean, Sea Captain’s starts every meal with complimentary hush puppies and things only get better from there. The Jambalaya is outstanding, but the Captain’s Seafood Muddle - sautéed shrimp, scallops, fish, mussels and clams in a saffron tomato broth with bacon, potatoes, celery and herbs – is a house specialty.

3. Divine’s Fish House –
Murrell’s Inlet is the Seafood Capital of South Carolina and Divine’s is one of the reasons why. A breathtaking view of the marsh is accompanied by a fresh fish menu that includes swordfish, flounder, yellowfin ahi tuna and mahi-mahi. Divine’s is very good.

4. Collector’s Café – The area’s most unique restaurant, Collector’s is a world class restaurant and a working art gallery rolled into one. The sonoran spiced yellowfin tuna, which is caught locally, is excellent, but the scallop cake is an original dish that is as good as any entrée on the beach.

5. Gulfstream Café – The only restaurant in the area where the Atlantic is visible on one side and Murrells Inlet on the other, Gulfstream’s food is often the equal of its stunning views. The she-crab soup is a must, and if you are looking for a recommendation, the grouper francais is a good one.

As far a North Myrtle Beach goes, The Marina Raw Bar is My favorite. It also has the best oyster roast in the Myrtle Beach Area.

There is no doubt the the Gulfstream has the best She-Crab soup on the planet. You can almost eat it with a fork! Also, I would have to consider Sara J's in Garden City a top spot.

My favorite restaurant in North Myrtle Beach is Hoskins on Main Street. Good down home cooking and Southern hospitality. I love the biscuits with breakfast. It is where all the locals eat.

I'll agree with Sarah J's being worth the drive to Garden City. I think Sea Captain's is way overrated.

We were NOT impressed with the Sea Captain's House. They supposedly have a great view, but only if you happen to get a table with the view. We did not. Our meal could have been prepared from a TV dinner. We were not impressed. Rivertown Bistro however IS the best. We travel over 45 minutes to go there and do so frequently. Nice town to spend some time browsing in before or after your meal. The outside of the restaurant may not entice you, it looks like a "store front", but the newly renovated inside is beautiful. If you sit upstairs on a table for two, you can peek over the balcony and watch the preparations in the kitchen. The food has unusual combinations that tantaize your taste buds. Their Spring Rolls are wonderful, and their yam chips and dipping sauce are addictive. Their seafood is excellent, but so is everything else on their menu. Definitely worth a trip to have a wonderful meal.

Hey, my wife and I really like Sara "J's" on Atlantic Blvd., south of Myrtle Beach. It could be Garden City or Surfside. Great marsh view and sea food. Wally & Shelia

I agree with most but "Sara'Js" ??? The worst.Nice view, bad food. The Waterside at the Grand Dunes has great fish. You have to find those very few places that serve fresh local fish and shrimp and know how to cook it. Little places like Harrelsons Fish Market has a great grouper sandwich for lunch in Murrells Inlet. Chiao in Myrtle beach on Kings Hwy. does great fish.Grouper Francias is wonderful.Rivertown Bistroin Conway very nice.Franks in Pawleys Island and Chive Blossom Cafe has the best She-crab soup and real crab in there crab crepes. To die for.
