Charlie's Corner: Rymer Gets Robbed, Reminded of his Good Fortune

Tuesday, March 16, 2010 by Chris King

CharlieRymer_2009.jpgI just realized how incredibly spoiled I am when it comes to golf.

Last week I played my first ever round of golf with rental clubs.  My clubs were swiped from my car the day before a round so I had to go with the clubs the golf course had available.

The theft occurred in my own driveway (in Florida).

For most folks, and round of golf with rentals wouldn’t be a big deal, but keep in mind that I am not a normal size human being.  I am 6’4” and top the scales at a number significantly above 185 pounds.  My clubs are an inch and a half long, super extra stiff, and the grips are as thick as sausages.

The same thief that stole my clubs also ran off with a pair of my size fifteen golf shoes.  The beautiful irony in all this is that these clubs and shoes will be totally useless to the thief or whoever ends up with them.

They also got my GPS and it has a theft deterrent code.  The thief will be able to use the GPS only as a doorstop, the clubs as bar bells, and the shoes will make lovely his and hers kayaks.

In fact, if you see someone navigating a river in Florida with a Garmin GPS in an Adidas 360 Tour golf shoe using a Rossa Itsy Bitsy putter as a rutter, please alert the authorities.

Since I was 18 years old I’ve had access to the latest in golf technology that was expertly fitted for me.  This is something that I’ve very much taken for granted over the years.  In my round with the rentals I had to drastically alter my swing and set up.  It was almost like I had never played before.

While most golfers are a little closer to “normal” in their physical characteristics than I am, I still think taking the time to work with a professional fitter is a wise investment.  Having fitted clubs gives you the opportunity to play your best golf.

Yes, fitted clubs do make a difference. At 6'1" I have nclubs that are 1 inch longer and flex at the lower part of the club. However, my size 13 shoes are no big deal. Watch you on the golf Channel a lot, love your work. Hope you get your clubs back.

Sorry Charlie, I've been there done that, but didn't get the Tee shirt. It just hurts, that someone would do this. Buy the new set you always wanted.

Great article, Charlie. On my next trip to Myrtle Beach I'll keep a heads-up for your clubs; these massive mothers should be easy to spot. And hold the perp with a threat of a head thumping with the size 15's . Good golfing.

Charlie, As a fellow golfer I feel for you. But,"since I was 18 I've had access to the latest golf technology...." This is where it stops. I learned to caddie to get any spending money because there were so (&$6#*@) many of us.... I am 65 and golf clubs are not cheap for me. I get them off the rack and have the irons bent 2 degrees flat. (why don't they do the same with woods?) If someone doesn't PRESENT you with custom made clubs, your insurance will cover it. With me, I didn't have a rider policy to handle it. I think you are a nice man as exhibited on the tube, but "come on man!" We won't cry for each other and I will continue to watch and wish you the best. a fan

Sorry Charlie,By the way if you find your clubs and shoes down there ask them if they have mine anywhere. I was in Myrtle Beach on vacation on July 4th 2008 when I got up to play golf that morning I found my car (a 2003 C class Mercedes) had been stolen along with my golf clubs, shoes, prescription sunglasses, amoung other personal items. I had wanted a Mercedes my whole life and 3 months after finally obtaining one it gets stolen. Needless to stay I avoided Myrtle Beach last year and to be honest,I don't know when or if I'll ever return. Anyway love you on The Golf Channel.Keep up the good work.
