Charlie's Corner: Covering The Tiger Woods Saga

Wednesday, February 17, 2010 by Chris King

CharlieRymer_2009.jpgWelcome to Charlie's Corner, the blog home for Golf Channel analyst Charlie Rymer. A lifelong Myrtle Beach golfer, Rymer, with his charectaristic whit and unique perspective, will be weighing in on all things golf.

The days since Thanksgiving have been challenging for those of us that cover the world of golf for a living.

The Tiger Woods situation took all of us by surprise.  I remember walking in to Golf Channel for what was going to be a normal day of show tapings.  As soon as I hit the door I was told to get on a suit and have some makeup thrown on and head to the studio.

We did a 2 hour live special that afternoon and we only had 17 minutes to prep for it.  In a situation like that, all you can do is be honest and speak from the heart.  Hopefully that is what has come across to the viewers

My concerns from the beginning have been for Tiger and his family.  I'm very hopeful that he will do the work to get the best possible outcome for his family, whatever that may be.  I hope to see Tiger back on the course after he has the family situation and his personal issues sorted out.

I don't think it does Tiger, his family, or the game any good at all to see him on the course until that point.  If and when he returns is the million dollar question.  I'm sure his return will be a major media event and I've been overwhelmed at the attention this story has received.  It really hit home to me when I was driving by the entrance to the community where Tiger lives the day after his world came tumbling down.  It looked like a Super Bowl was about to kick off.

I'm just hopeful that we all give his family the time and privacy they need.  I'm not optimistic that will happen.Charlie Rymer, a Golf Channel analyst and the host of Road Trip: Myrtle Beach, is a former PGA Tour player and collegiate All-American at Georgia Tech. Rymer, who grew up playing in Myrtle Beach, has travled the world playing and talking about the game of golf and will share his unique perspective in Charlie's Corner.

Comments for Charlie's Corner: Covering The Tiger Woods Saga

Charlie, What makes Tiger any different from a super-star baseball or basketball player or a late-night TV star who had indiscretions? Or, different from Joe Blow on the street who had an affair at work and had to return the day after the discovery? The expectations for Tiger have been high...we expect him to win and he has...more than any other golfer in history (for his life span). We expect his life to be perfect, to match our view of this Prince Charming...but he is NOT perfect. So why can't he go to work??? The "conscience" is a funny thing...to bad it doesn't control our actions prior to rather than after the events. Tiger is good for golf...the sport needs him and, personally, I think he should "man-up", face the media openly and get back to work.
Monday, February 22, 2010 by Larry Leon Perrow Sr.:
I think Tiger was a little late in addressing this to the Public. I have told my friends that the media should cut away from at times. Now the reason why is that he has a foul mouth that we don't need to see or hear. I praise Tom Watson for his comments and believe that more of the pro's should do the same. Tiger Woods is not the GOD Almighty he is a human just like the rest of us. He is a control freak and I hope that he doesn't do that to his wife. I like Tiger and hope he gets his head on stright and comes back to GOLF but be ready for the crazies in the gallery who will not give in to his control. Thanks

Tiger forgot to apologize for lying to the world about what happened last Thanksgiving. He lead the world to believe he was being wrongfully accused of having extra-marital affair(s), instead he blamed National Enquirer for being irresponsible for reporting such untruths...he hasn't proven that he has changed on bit since then. What about the Performance Enhancing Drugs that he is suspected of using due to his contact with the doctor who is notorious for provding these drugs to athletes? I believe that he ducked out of sight for long enough to get these drugs out of his system before being asked to pee in a bottle...

I'm not sure what to believe anymore in the Tiger saga. Personally the whole thing is getting stale and not worth worrying about. I just hope Tiger doesn't show up at Augusta without addressing all the lingering questions and ruin that event for the other golfers. I think he needs to man up and put this whole episode behind him.

Hey Charlie, You are great on the Golf Channel. I am most bothered by Tiger Woods because he seemed to be so full of control of his life - personally and professionally. How can someone so smart and brought up by his parents so well get so far off track? I hope he and his family heal soon. I feel sorry for his family - especially his mom - who looked ill in the front row at the press conference. I miss him on the course and I am still a big fan of his being a GOLFER - but his personal life is incredibly disappointing. Most of the time there are shady friends involved - he needs to get rid of those !!

Mr. Rymer I believe you did a great job on providing your views on the Tiger situation prior to and after the statement. If you think about it; the guilt Tiger is feeling is going to wear on him for many years to come, it will be hard at times to focus even while playing golf. The best to him and yourself.

Charlie, I enjoy your work on the golf channel and look forward to reading this column on a regualr basis. Tiger Woods is just a man, not a superhero or an angel from heaven. He happens to be blessed with an enormous amount of talent and a freakish work ethic. It has made him wealthy and famous beyond comprehension. His marital infidelity and issues are none of our business. He never promised me or the fans a thing. He has to live with the consequences of his off the course behavior. I enjoy watching the man master at times the game I love and play. He hits shots that even makes his fellow tour pros go "wow did you see that".Thats why I'm a fan not for the cover model wife, homes cars etc. I hope he resolves his personal issues and does whats best for him and his family and returns to the fairways when the time is right.

These scandals have been and always will be about one thing and one thing only... MONEY. Someone has to make money or prevent losing it, but who? Seems pretty clear it's the media and corporate sponsors. The media and sponsors create images of successful people as the type of person you should be. That gets you to watch/buy more thus creating more advertising/retail dollars for that media outlet or sponsor. The media/sponsors have absolutely no idea what Tiger or the laundry list of other "scandalous" athletes/celebs were like before they started singing their praises, and they don't care. They prop that person up making money while doing so and when the eventual fall comes (and it always does), they pretend they knew this person and pretend they are now "hurt" by their actions. So what does the media do next? Of course, they publicize the hell of of it. Why? Because people watch. And when people watch, that means more advertising dollars. But not once does the media make a contraction for how they put this person in your face and sang their praises repeatedly. You will never hear that. So what does the sponsor do? Prevention mode. Claim ignorance. Do whatever is necessary to stop the bleeding. I can't blame them for ditching the "offender", but I do blame them for repeatedly putting this person in our faces and singing their praises without an apologetic word when the saint turns out to be a sinner. The only aspect about the "scandal" that effects me is I may not be able to watch the offender perform for a period of time. Not a big deal to me, but obviously a bid deal to media and sponsors who are no longer making as much money off the offender as they were. Not to worry, the media and sponsors already have the next victim in waiting. It's just a matter of time.

I have extracted the two quotes above from your original message. If you truly believed this you would not have started your latest episode of career building with an article on Tiger. Period ....... Why wont people leave him alone and get on with reporting news rather than creating same. Hugh

Why are those theoretically 'close' to Tiger Woods (PGA of America, Golf Channel) the ones carefully tiptoeing around the issues? Rymer has soft soaped the matter from the outset ... but Charlie is entitled to his opinion. But, like Rymer, the mainstream media refuses to address the core issue here: that many people have never liked Tiger Woods ... because he is just not likeable. Aloof, robotic and petulant are not endearing qualities, yet these are the traits which Woods has displayed since he turned pro. Of course, his skill level has been allowed to overshadow these glaring shortcomings. Sure ... Tiger's ability puts asses in the seats but his perceived arrogance makes it easy for a lot of fans to revel in his misfortune. It's unlikely that the discovery of Woods' philandering will have any longterm positive effect on his on course demeanor. In fact, Woods' self-imposed isolation will more than likely become more apparent. It's interesting, but not surprizing, that caddy Steve Williams has already caste down the gauntlet to any potential hecklers out there, implying that he will 'go after' anyone who messes with his guy. Tim Finchem acknowledged that there may be comments made (to Woods) from future galleries. Finally, what about the the lame cover-up of what really occured (inside and)outside the Woods residence in the wee hours of 11/27? So, we're going to stick with the "my wife tried to save me - with a nine iron" baloney. Puh-lease. This was a traffic accident on (I think) a public thoroughfare - and no one's looking into it. Oh well, I guess we can cut him some slack on that one ... he's had a tough new year.

Charlie, While I really enjoyed watching Road Trip: Myrtle Beach (as I live a few hours away), I don't understand why everybody is so sympathetic toward Tiger Woods. He is a man who had 14 different affairs that we know of. Unlike many other people who live their life in the spot life, I have yet to see them have an affair of this magnitude. It showed his lack of respect for his fans, who believed the image that his marketing team and he allowed to be pushed forward. he also showed an incredible amount of disrespect towards his wife and children. No husband, father, or man should ever treat their family in this manner. There is only one thing that he can do to prove to his family that he needs them in his life, and that is to not play golf until the time comes that his family is solid again. That decision won't rest upon him, but will come from his family. I think more and more commentators need to hold his feet to the fire and call a spade a spade, much like Alex Micelli did. Sure, it is the unpopular thing to do, and Mr. Palmer and the TGC execs might not like it, but Tiger is not bigger than the PGA Tour or the game of golf. Everything will continue fine without him. I hope he can resurrect himself as a different person, because I did not like the person he was when I met him in '92 and '93, and he doesn't seemed to have changed much since then either. Maybe he can become a bit more of a family man, that has the sole concern of his family at heart, and not Mr. Nicklaus' major record.

I thought your comments were pretty much on target. As for some of the comments by the bloggers, no so much on target. As a nobody in nowhere USA even I know the temptations that are put to us in our daily lives. I can't begin to comprehend the ones that are put to someone of Tiger's statue. We are all accountable for our own actions and it's time for Tiger to pay the piper. But he doesn't owe any of us anything, any more than any other celeb that has been caught with his or her pants down. If it doesn't affect me directly I try not to judge. Gosh wouldn't that be a nice motto for the press to follow. Let's face it, with out their feeding frenzy, this would have been exactly what it is, a personal problem for Tiger and his family.

Hey Charlie, I don't know what to think about Tiger. I like everyone else am amazed at his golfing abilities. There is no one to match him in any field because he has one thing over everyone . . . he's Tiger and they're playing him. Call it being scared or just choking but it happens 97% of the time (that # was higher back in 2000). So when I watched his speech, which again he let his "people" tell him what to say, I wasn't surprised or impressed. I feel sorry for the guy because he just hasn't got it yet. He should have spoken from the heart, don't read a bunch of cards. He didn't even tell his wife he loved her on national television. That would have been the first thing I did. Seemed like it was more for his fans and media around the world than anyone else. I like Tiger, wish it would all go away. Let them figure things out on their own, we don't need hourly updates from the media to sell more time slots.

I have been playing golf a long time. Took lots of lessons & played very well. I respect so many of the pros for their demeaner and see them as good role models for children and their own families. I've played with many of them.I enjoyed Tiger Woods immensely when he came along. There was excitement in the game when he came on the scene, but, he seemed to take it to another level. My respect for him started to change when I heard him curse and throw clubs. His parents did not raise him that way as we observed in the early documentaries of his growing up. You rarely hear other players curse or throw clubs. I never did either. There's always disappointment in not hitting your best shot. Money and fame can change any player, however, remember who's watching you play. People, especially young children, who pay admission fees, take lessons, buy equipment, watch TV, buy magazines, etc, everything that lines your pockets and bank accounts. As for his apology on TV, terrible. I think apologies should never be read. Sincerity is lost. Can you immagine Tiger apologizing to Elin, face to face, and reading an apology to her. Ha! Need I say any more. I read an article recently that sex addiction in men can never be cured. The author was a sex therapist.

Hay Charlie, Just have a few comments. People who make comments after the fact should take a good look around. First of all can anyonereally stand there and say that they would not lie when they get found with their hand in the cookie jar. it's human nature to try and protect yourself. Only after you are cornered do you give it up. Ask President Cliton! The late Preaident Nixon! They were only the leaders of the free world, not a PGA GOLFER, OMG. Man-up? Get real! The media for the most part are like sharks going after a meal, so why would anyone want to face them? as for going back to work. ow many of us have jobs that are watched by millions on tv and thousands of people a few yards away. Some of which want nothing more than to aggravate Tiger and get on tv. Golf takes prime concentration at a level us wekend players never reach. (If you could-you whould be ON tv, not sitting IN FRONT of it!) Dopes in the gallery will be waiting to say or do something to mess with Tiger and we all know it! Anyone who does (to Tiger or any pro golfer) should be given a LIFETIME ban from every PGA event! As far as Reporters go. Anyone that would follow a child around and then give out the school name chould be fired and charged with stalking and endangering the welfare of. It was thoughtless-and just WRONG. Whatever Tiger did was in his private life and should stay there. It's not any of our buniness. just becouse you want to know does not give you the right to know. One of the things Tiger Needs to do is to put people around him that BOTH he and his wife can TRUST. Tiger needs that trust when he is playing and his wife needs it when he is not playing. I hope Tiger can over come the problems he has placed on himself and the ones that the press, fellow PGA golfers and so called fans will add. I hope to see Tiger on tour again. It will be interesting to see how does and how he is mis-treated by the press, pros and fans. GO TiGER!

There sluts, plain and simple, just looking for a possible big payday and 15 minutes of fame. One of the things Tiger Needs to do is to put people around him that BOTH he and his wife can TRUST. Tiger needs that trust when he is playing and his wife need it when he is not playing. I hope Tiger can overcome the problems he has placed on himself and the ones that the press, fellow PGA golfers and so called fans will add. I hope to see Tiger on tour again. It will be interesting to see how does and how he is miss-treated by the press, pros and fans. GO Tiger!

Tiger may be adored by many a golf fan solely because of his strength & ball striking ability. But he never has been a true "role model" in my eyes with his constant vulgar "spitting" on the course, unbelievably foul mouth and his notorious club throwing tirades. And he talks about equalling Jack Nicklaus' records in Majors and over wins. Pleeeeeease, he will NEVER match up with Jack, or Gary or Arnold or Lee or Tom W. in manners or control of self. Golf was always a gentleman's game. Tiger is NOT a gentleman but rather a controlling, spoiled, rich kid who thinks no one should approach him or ask him for a "high five" or some small souvenier as he walks by on or off the course. I get sick to my stomach watching him walk passed little kids who come out to see him as they try to greet him in the parking lot at a tournament site and he does not have the decency to even acknowledge them with as little as a smile as they try to get an autograph. He should remember that he was once a kid. A kid who is lucky to have had the parents who took time with him ! Had they ignored him as he ignores his little "followers" where would he be ? by M. Charley, have you or the Golf Channel, or even the PGA, ever consider the effects of the adjulation and worship of Tiger Woods that you all have had a hand in when you commercialize someone to the extent that you have with Woods? You all know from first hand experience what his demeaner is and to not get to close when he's not happy. He is a great talent but a selfish inward human being who is constantly fawned on by all of you despite your private knowledge of his selfish all abbout me attitude, Tom Watson had it correct you need more that talent to be a legend in the game of gentlemen. And next is the cannonazation of John Daly. Come on Golf Channel, have a little respect for the game, your not supposed to be a scandal sheet.

If Tiger wants his personel life personel, fine. Then stay out of my personel life. Before his dethroning everywhere I looked I saw his smiley face telling me what to drive, what to wear, what to eat, where to invest, etc. If he stops, I'll stop.

Tiger, what were you thinking? Every male on this third rock knows you do not have indisgressions and leave a trail of evidence. There is no cure for liking sex and this treatment is a royal scam.If you wanted to pull this stunt off, you should have consulted walter Hagen. Tiger is not the first guy to ever step on a burning bag of shit, nor will he be the last on the PGA tour. Confess to stupidity and the fact that cocktail waitresses are hot and you crave sex. This just makes you a regular guy and this is something you do not have to apologize for and it makes you more credible!

Tiger Woods is " The Golf Channel" boy whom they get their ratings. Brandel and Charlie Come on Man !! Even while this saga was ongoing you had replays of him ... Trying to keep positive thoughts in your viewing minds... I also know first hand that he gets preferential treatment for all interviews as he dictates what CAN and CANNOT be asked. Come on Man !! I understood he made Golf Channel... but lets not sugar coat things. Brandel ..I realise you must deal with him when he returns.. but talking about what he has done for golf (Purses)is a separate issue.. Now lets ask? Who was the Greatest Golfer of all time? It will not matter now because Jack always will be the greatest. Tiger is tarnished.. lying, cheating etc.. like Barry Bonds in Baseball.. he might BE the greatest hitter... but Steroids and his lying about it will always discredit his on field accomplishments.. Sorry Tiger
