Defending NCAA men's golf champion Augusta State fired a seven-under par 281 Monday to move up three spots and win the 2011 General Jim Hackler Championship with a 54-hole score of 858, played at TPC of Myrtle Beach. Host Coastal Carolina, who was tied for second after 36 holes Sunday, shot 310 on Monday to finish sixth with a three-round total of 904.
Augusta State was led by Henrik Norlander and Patrick Reed on Monday, each carding 67s to be the only players to break 70. Norlander was the individual medialist, shooting 74-69-67 for a six-under 210 and beating runner-up Amory Davis (Virginia) by four strokes. Reed moved up from 19th to tie for fourth with his 67 Monday, backing up his 74-75 on Sunday to finish even par 216.
Virginia, the leader after 18 and 36 holes, placed second with its 881 Monday and 881 total. Rounding out the top five were Auburn (890), Tennessee (893) and Pepperdine (897).
Of the 17 teams in the 2011 General Hackler Championship, 12 appear in the Golf Week/Sagarin top 100 team rankings, including #8 Auburn, #15 Augusta State, #18 Virginia, #25 Wake Forest, #35 Pepperdine, #38 Tennessee, #48 East Carolina, #49 North Florida, #58 Coastal Carolina, #70 Lamar, #90 East Tennessee State and #96 College of Charleston.
Golfstat ranks teams based on record and includes three teams in the nation's top 25. Augusta State ranks 10th with a 2010-11 season record of 292-9 and is 14-9 versus the nation's top 25 while winning four events this season. Virginia comes in a 12th with a 2010-11 season mark of 290-11 with one team win and a 12-10 ledger over the top 25. North Florida is ranked 22nd, posting a 280-21 record to date and winning twice, while Tennessee is 25th with a 275-26 season record and posting a pair of team wins as well. Coastal Carolina is ranked 56th in Golfstat with a season record of 237-64. Others in the Golfstat top 100 are East Tennessee State at 31st (269-32), Pepperdine at 34th (267-3), Wake Forest at 35th (267-34), Auburn at 41st (261-40), East Carolina at 69th (234-67)and Lamar at 76th (225-76).
Individually for Coastal Carolina, Sebastian Soderberg recorded his fifth top 20 finish in seven events this season. The sophomore carded back-to-back 71s on Sunday and shot 81 Monday for a three-round total of seven-over par 223 to tie for 13th. Redshirt junior Tripp McAllister finished 30th. He turned in 74s for his first two rounds and posted an 80 on Monday for a 54-hole total of 228. Drew Ernst bounced back from his second-round 81 to shoot 77 and finish 40th (tied) with a total of 231. Charlie Winegardner was one stroke back of Ernst to finish tied for 43 with a 54-hole score of 232 (81-74-77). Freshman Roberto Ballesteros finished tied for 54th with his 233 total (77-80-76).
Steve Delmar and Conner Pratt played as individuals at the 2011 Hackler. Delmar placed 62nd (tied) with a 54-hole score of 238 while Pratt tied for 80th (245).
